Spirit of India Extended Tour - 10 days, 9 overnights

New Delhi, Varanasi, Khajuraho, Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Jaipur, Ranakpur & Udaipur - This amazing voyage in north India includes the most important historical and cultural sites in the nation's capital, New Delhi; A short flight from Delhi brings you to Hinduism's holiest and most ancient city, Varanasi and the archaeological site of Sarnath, the deer park north of Varanasi where Buddha preached his first sermon to his initial five disciples setting in motion the 'Dharmachakra', the wheel of religion. Another short flight from Varanasi brings you to the world famous Hindu and Jain temples from 10th. century that were built under the patronage of Chandela Rajput rulers of central India.the medieval Mughal capital Agra that is famous for the Taj Mahal & Fatehpur Sikri, the capital for 14 years of the Mughal Emperor Akbar that was then deserted for almost 400 years until the early years of 20th. century. The ancient Kachhwaha Rajput capital of Amber and the 17th. century built walled city of Jaipur offer breathtaking sights and sounds. Udaipur, the city of lakes and palaces is the final stop in this amazing journey followed by an day excursion to Chowmukha Jain Temples in Ranakpur.


Day 01 // Delhi:
Arrive in Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi. Traditional welcome with fresh marigold flower garland and transfer to hotel for overnight.


Day 02 // Delhi:
After breakfast proceed for sightseeing of New Delhi - Qutub Minar- its construction was initiated by Qutubudin-Aibak in 1199 CE upon becoming the first Sultan of Delhi;

second Mughal Emperor Humayun's Tomb (its construction started in 1569 under supervision of his widow, Haji Begum) - its architecture may have influenced the construction of the Taj Mahal in Agra; Baha'i Lotus Temple - this distinctive lotus shaped marvel in marble is a symbol of peace; India Gate (the war memorial), Parliament House and Presidents House (from outside). In the afternoon stop by the Red Fort for photography from outside - the massive sandstone fort built by Shah Jahan on the banks of river Yamuna, Jama Masjid - is the largest mosque in India and stands across the road from the Red Fort, built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan 1648 CE. About 20,000 people can pray here at a time. Overnight stay in hotel in New Delhi.


Day 03 // Delhi - Varanasi:
Proceed to airport to board the Spice Jet flight # SG2195 departing at 6.25 am to arrive in Varanasi at 8 am (flight schedule & carrier may vary), transfer to hotel. Visit the Man Mandir Palace with astronomical observatory of Sawai Jai Singh of Amber and Jaipur, and temples on the Ghats and Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple. Later enjoy the sightseeing of temples in the ancient city and the Bharat Kala Bhawan Art Museum in the Banaras Hindu University campus area. In the evening enjoy the Ganga Artee, a unique oil lamps prayer ceremony on the banks of the River. Overnight in hotel.


Day 04 // Varanasi – Khajuraho:
Early morning boat ride on River Ganga to view the Hindu rituals at sunrise. After breakfast check-out and drive to Sarnath, where Buddha preached his first sermon more than 2500 years ago for viewing the archaeological sites, Dhamek Stupa built by Mauryan Emperor Ashok, Mulgandha Kuti Vihar Temple. Later transfer to airport to board the flight to Khajuraho.

After arrival transfer to hotel and enjoy a half day’s sightseeing of the Hindu temple group including the Varaha, Lakshman, Kandaria Mahaveo & Jagdambi Temples and overnight in hotel.


Day 05 // Khajuraho – Orchha – Jhansi – Agra:
After breakfast enjoy the sightseeing of the Jain group of temples. Later drive to Orchha. After lunch at Orchha Resort, sightseeing of Orchha Fort and the two Hindu Temples (including one with murals) on the way to Jhansi. Transfer to railway station to board train # 2002 Bhopal Shatabdi Express departing from Jhansi at 3.30 PM and arriving in Agra at 8.10 PM (train runs daily except on Fridays, on Fridays the transfer to Agra will be by Taj Express Train). Arrival & transfer to hotel and overnight in Hotel.


Day 06 // Agra:
Before dawn drive a short distance to the world famous Taj Mahal for viewing the world famous monument to love of Emperor Shahjahan to his Queen Begum Mumtaj Mahal. Ample time for sightseeing in the vast walled complex. After breakfast at hotel marvel at the craftsmanship at a marble factory where traditional artisans still work using similar hand operated implements that their forefathers had used more than 300 years ago when they worked to build the Taj Mahal. On the way to hotel visit Agra’s oldest and best marble inlay factory which is a virtual museum. Some of the work done by their artisans is much finer and delicate than the inlay art work in the Taj Mahal itself.

Drive to the Red Fort of Agra for sightseeing of the red sandstone palaces of Emperor Akbar and the white marble palace that his grandson Emperor Shahjahan replaced. Emperor Aurangzeb, the son of Emperor Shahjahan kept him a prisoner in his own palaces for the last 8 years of his life.

Later visit the Tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah, a mausoleum in white marble that was built under supervision of Empress Nurjahan for her parents, Mirza Ghiaz Beg and Begum Asmat. Mirza Ghiaz Beg received the title of Itmad-ud-Daulah (trusted by God) by Emperor Jahangir. Overnight in hotel.


Day 07 // Agra – Fatehpur Sikri- Jaipur:
After breakfast at hotel and proceed to Jaipur with stop to visit Fatehpur Sikri, the deserted capital of Emperor Akbar. Sightseeing in Fatehpur Sikri includes the vast Palaces area with a blend of various architectural styles to reflect Emperor Akbar’s tolerant religious philosophy.

Near Dausa town stop at Abhineri Village to view Chand Baori, the world's deepest step-well. On arrival in Jaipur check in to the hotel. In the late afternoon demonstrations of wooden block printing on cotton textiles, woolen carpet weaving as well as cutting & polishing of precious & semi-precious stones. Overnight stay in hotel in Jaipur. Overnight in hotel.


Day 08 // Jaipur:
After breakfast drive through the walled “Pink City” to stop at Hawa Mahal, a royal parades viewing gallery for the women of Maharaja’s family in which they could watch outside but people outside could not see them.

At the foot of Amber Hill ride a decorated elephant up to the hilltop palaces of Maharaja Man Singh (one of the Navratnas, the 9 most important nobles of Emperor Akbar’s court and the convex mirror decorated palaces of Mirza Raja Jai Singh. After lunch sightseeing of the City Palace of Kachhwaha Maharajas to view the fascinating textiles gallery in Mubarak Mahal, the Sarvatobhadra (Hall of Private Audience) with the two famous Gangajallis (Silver Urns to carry Ganga River water), the colorful courtyard of Chandra Mahal with its Peacock Gate and the “Diwan-i-Am” Art Gallery that houses some of the most famous large paintings of portraits of various Maharajas of Kachhwaha Dynasty of Amber & Jaipur. Stepping out of the City Palace visit the Astronomical Observatory that is largest one built by the founder of Jaipur, Sawai Jai Singh. All except one of its 17 astronomical instruments are still functional. Dinner & Overnight in hotel.


Day 09 // Jaipur – Udaipur:
After breakfast transfer to the Sanganer Airport in Jaipur to board the Spice Jet SG2623 departing at 8.35 am and arrive in Udaipur at 9.30 am. Transfer to hotel. Start the full day’s sightseeing of the Sisodia Dynasty’s City Palace, the largest royal palace in the state of Rajasthan. The Maharanas of Mewar had their original capital in the present day pilgrimage town of Nagda, 30 kilometers or 19 miles north of Udaipur. It was established by the 1st. Maharana, Guhil, in 568 CE. In the 8th century CE the capital was moved to Chittor, where the successive Maharanas built the largest Fort and city in contemporary India. Already before the sacking of Chittorgarh by Mughal Emperor Akbar, in February 1568 after a long siege that began in October 1567, the plans for a new capital were under way. The construction of the Mewar Dynasty’s City Palace in Udaipur started in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh and continued by his successors over a period of about 300 years. Today the visitors see the Mardana (male section) and Zanana (female section) of the museum part of the palace. Apart from this two other sections of the palace are converted in to hotels: “The Shiv Niwas Palace” and “The Fateh Prakash Palace”. The descendents of the Maharanas of Mewar still reside in one section of the palace.

After City Palace walk north through the Tripolia (3-arched royal entrance) to the Jagdish Temple that was constructed by Maharana Jagat Singh in 1651 CE. In the afternoon visit the Saheliyon-ki-Bari fountain gardens for the women of Maharana’s family. Take a boat ride on Pichola Lake and visit the Jag Mandir Island Palace where Mughal Emperor Shahjahan took refuge while revolting against his father, the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. He was inspired to use marble instead of red sandstone in his palaces and monuments after his stay here. Overnight in hotel.


Day 10 // Udaipur – Ranakpur – New Delhi - USA:
After breakfast drive to Ranakpur for lunch and sightseeing of the Chowmukha Jain Temple that was built between 1437 and 1458. This Jain temple is one of the finest in India in its design and sculptures. Return to Udaipur, dinner at Airport Hotel & Restaurant on the highway near airport and later transfer to board the Indigo Airlines flight 6E299 departing at 8.40 pm and arrive in New Delhi domestic airport at 10.05 pm (flies all 7 days of the week). An earlier Spice Jet flight SG2638 departs at 8.10 pm and arrives in New Delhi at 9.35 pm but does not fly on Wednesdays. (Flight schedules and carrier may change) Transfer to Indira Gandhi International Airport to board the return flight.
